Instagram post 17896461622442280 As we sit on the tarmac waiting for the maintenance guy to come fix the de-icer (because it’s SO cold here right now it’s not working so we can’t take off 🛫😫🥶), I’m dreaming of the last time I was warm!! The old colonial French architecture in Cayenne was one of my favourite things about the city. In some places it was incredibly well-preserved, while in other areas it was boarded up and being reclaimed by nature. Sometimes these both occurred on the same block! If I had any inclination to live on French Guiana (definitely not...it’s TOO hot!), I’d love to get my hands on one of these and restore it to its former glory. I think it would be such a fulfilling project. Okay, back to the plane de-icing...who even knows what it is? Who’s been on a plane that had to be de-iced? It’s a regular occurrence for us up here in the Great White North, but something tells me lots of people won’t even know what it is 🤣 #whereistheworld #takeyourkidseverywhere #frenchguiana

So here’s my first ‘eye-related post’, without a joke because I’ve already heard too many bad 2020 jokes!! While out & about on a morning walk in Cayenne, Calais & I stumbled upon this great little piece of #streetartwork and the #optometrist in me couldn’t help but take a picture! What do you think...would you paint your house pink and put a giant eye and rainbow 🌈 on it?! #whereistheworld #familytravel #frenchguiana
Instagram post 17896281553432758 I’m dreaming of Asia (as the temps plummet outside!) Our good friends, who we were with in Vietnam this time 2 years ago, are off adventuring in Thailand...and we’re helping other friends plan a trip to Vietnam in February. It’s definitely got Asia on my mind! We got close in November. We visited Cacao, a small Hmong settlement in French Guiana. There was a little Sunday market with Pho soup 🍜 for breakfast, sticky rice in banana leaves, and a variety of Hmong handicrafts (mostly from Thailand). By lucky 🍀 fluke it was their New Years celebration so we also got to enjoy dancing, food stalls and the girls dressed up in traditional clothes. I’m not sure if it satiated my Asia-fix or made me want to go more!! It was a bit odd though...being in a distinctly Vietnamese town, in France, in South America! 🤯 #whereistheworld #frenchguiana #cacaomarket #cacaofrenchguiana
Instagram post 17843522539854422 Did you know that the European Space Port is actually in South America? French Guiana is full of surprises! We had an incredible day learning all about space, satellites 🛰 and that the space center was built in French Guiana because it’s proximity to the equator means the launches are more energy efficient (i.e.cheaper!). Kacela was too young to tour the whole center (min age 8), so we just visited the museum, which was still pretty cool! Now we’ll need to go back when she’s a bit older, and hopefully time it to watch a launch 🚀 #whereistheworld #spacecenter #kourouspacecenter #frenchguiana
