My well travelled Canadian privilege is coming out My well travelled Canadian privilege is coming out here. I was initially disappointed when I found out the Transfagarasan pass in Romania was still closed during our trip. I’m a mountain girl in my soul and I was looking forward to driving this road! When I found out that it was essentially all open except for the summit I was pretty excited. Sure, we’d have to go up & back, but I figured it would be worth it. And it was, I think! And only because it’s low season. In the summer, this road becomes bumper to bumper traffic and can take an hour to go just 3-4km 🤯. I’m not sure any road in the world is worth that! The pass itself is nice, with a few switchbacks and great views down the valley. But the most spectacular stretch of road (in my opinion), is the bottom section driving through a gorgeous gorge (Dad joke intended 😝), up to the dam. I was expecting something like the Ice Fields parkway 🇨🇦 in the Rockies, and instead it was more like the Hope-Princeton (iykyk😝). In low season we were essentially all on our own. We saw bears, a fox, waterfalls & the girls played in the snow. This time of year…likely worth it! Home stays are the best stays! We spend a fair am Home stays are the best stays! We spend a fair amount of time wild camping with Gimli. And while it connects us with nature (and keeps costs down!), it disconnects us from the local culture, which for us is all about the food, and a big reason why we travel! (Kacela announced the other day that she wouldn’t need to travel if the food at home was as good as abroad 😂) So I love finding family run accommodations that also offer a home cooked dinner and breakfast. We get a delicious meal and we often have a good chat with the owner and gain a bit of insight into their lives. This stay in Serbia was exceptional. Kacela tried to catch a frog and it jumped right on her! And a lizard tried to stow away in our wheel (don’t worry, we got it out before we drove away!). We had a delicious dinner with asparagus picked fresh from the garden. And we enjoyed a short nature walk after a home made Burek breakfast. Do you know what country this is? It’s better Do you know what country this is? It’s better known for its quirky capital city Skopje & the stunning Lake Ohrid. But we visited those last time.
