Did you know that Istanbul isn’t the capital of TĂŒ Did you know that Istanbul isn’t the capital of TĂŒrkiye?

Ankara was chosen as the capital by AtatĂŒrk in 1923. It doesn’t show up on a lot of tourist itineraries and it doesn’t have a reputation for being a ‘nice’ city (everyone in Istanbul looks down on Ankara!). But we enjoyed it.

The architecture is fascinating. It’s a mix of charming old Ottoman houses and brutalist concrete buildings.

We enjoyed Turkish fondue (Kuymak) and spent the evening catching up with an old colleague of Randy’s. The city feels edgy and artsy. Definitely worth a stop (imho).

but the weather decided not to cooperate AND there were no flamingos on the lake 😱

So we ended up driving a bit further (the kids both took turns driving!!) and found a smaller, quiet lake FULL of flamingos đŸŠ© and wild flowers đŸŒș.

It was stunning, and the best place to stay for the night.

Last balloon dump from Cappadocia. This place is Last balloon dump from Cappadocia.

This place is magical. Words can’t describe it and photos don’t do it justice. It simply must be experienced.

We spent one last night above Love Valley (kid’s choice!). Our neighbours were a local family who brought their tent up for the night. They force fed us dinner and then came over for coffee on the morning to watch the balloons. They spoke no English, and we speak no Turkish (aside from TeƟuker ederim) but Google Translate is an amazing thing!

While drinking my coffee and watching one balloon come up and over the ledge beside us, the pilot said something about coffee and I told him he was welcome to join us. Thinking nothing of it. He floated off and landed not too far from us.

About 45min later, he showed up with his wife when she came to pick him up!
We enjoyed a cup of coffee together and asked some questions about the balloon pilot training and lifestyle. And he asked about our travels and lifestyle. It was a lovely little exchange and we feel so grateful for these small interactions.

The people we’ve encountered in TĂŒrkiye have been so incredibly friendly and kind.

If Cappadocia isn’t on your bucket list yet, it should be!
