🇨🇦🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Driving around the world

You’ve never heard of Pinara. Neither had we! And You’ve never heard of Pinara. Neither had we! And it was one of the most extraordinary places we’ve visited in Türkiye. 👇

Pinara is an ancient Lycian city carved into a cliff face in southwestern Türkiye. It’s over 2,400 years old. The tombs — hundreds of them — are cut directly into the rock face so high up that archaeologists still aren’t entirely sure how they were built.

Most people drive straight past it to Ephesus or Pamukkale.

Their loss.

We arrived in Gimli, drove the steep road up to the site, and set out to explore. Just us, the ruins, and the sound of the wind through ancient stone.

No coaches. No queues. No gift shops (but there is a toilet 🚽😍)

We walked through a 2,400 year old city almost entirely alone.

And then we went inside the tombs.

At almost every ancient site in the world the tombs are roped off, locked, protected behind barriers. At Pinara you can walk straight in. Stand inside a burial chamber carved by hand into solid rock more than two millennia ago.

We camped above those cliffs that night. Woke up to sunrise over the ruins.

It was magical. Peaceful.

Here’s what you need to know if you want to go:
🚙 The road is steep but paved — any vehicle can make it. ⛺️ Camping at the site is possible but plan to set up later in the day. Or, do like we did and drive through the site and up the road, leaving the ancient city in peace.
🌄 Go early or stay late and you’ll have it entirely to yourself.
🛕Combine it with Myra and Xanthos for a Lycian ruins route that most tourists never find.

Türkiye gets millions of visitors every year. Almost none of them come here.

Save this for your Türkiye itinerary — and share it with anyone who likes to get off the typical path to find something extraordinary.

Have you heard of Saklikent Canyon? I hadn’t eith Have you heard of Saklikent Canyon?

I hadn’t either, but hiking here was so much fun!

We spent the night at a little campsite just down the road and we were headed into the Canyon by about 11am. We bought our tickets, grabbed a yellow helmet (not washed between users, just saying 😭) and headed down the boardwalk. When we came to the end there were benches and tables set up in the stream, and a few people walking up the river. So, we decided to give it a go.

The initial ‘rapids’ at the bottom of the little waterfall had me struggling a bit (damn my short legs!), but once we got in the groove of it, it was okay.

Until Calais got her flip flop stuck in the mud, pulled it out and ripped the top right apart! Luckily it was right at the beginning so Randy ran back and bought a pair of $3 water shoes (we left ours in Gimli, rookie mistake!)

The walk up the river, through the canyons was stunning! We rescued 2 floating flip flops, Kacela got completely soaked cuz she was wearing pants! (they started rolled up for about 5 sec and the she gave up and just got wet), Randy fell in when he got stuck in the mud, and Calais & I adopted the ‘crab walk’ cuz I was petrified of losing/wrecking my sandals!

On our way back I couldn’t believe the crowd. We basically had to fight through people at the bottom of the waterfall to get out! I was very grateful we’d arrived when we did.

My Tips for Visiting Saklikent Canyon(I.e. learn from my mistakes):
⏰ arrive early, I’d recommend 10am honestly
🩴 don’t wear flip flops! You’ll spend the whole time squeezing your toes together so you don’t lose them! Wear water shoes, crocs, or just buy the cheap ones at the entrance
👖 wear shorts 😂 and expect to get wet. Maybe even throw a bathing suit on underneath. We all had wet underwear at the end (to get an idea of how deep the water can be).
📱 Put your phone, etc in a waterproof pouch. Thankfully Randy left his behind, or his phone would be residing in a bag of rice right now!

What do you think? Would you come to Türkiye for this hike?

Have you fallen for society’s trap? We’re taught Have you fallen for society’s trap?

We’re taught to spend 40+ years trading our time for money.
To live for retirement.
To put ‘life’ off until we have ‘enough’.

But time is our most precious resource, not money.
Our kids get older, not younger.
Once we’ve lived a day, we can never get it back.

What do you keep putting off for tomorrow?
