Always keeping Randy on his toes 😂 I said, “Do yo Always keeping Randy on his toes 😂

I said, “Do you want to meander to dinner?”

He said, “sure”.

So, off we went, through the mountains on some unexpectedly steep and crazy gravel roads (the videos never do it justice!). We found an abandoned village, vineyards, and a weird building made out what looked like a large culvert!

It took us 1.5 hrs to go 18km, the perfect afternoon!

Who would’ve thought we’d find this in Cyprus?!

We spent most of our time in Cyprus away from the We spent most of our time in Cyprus away from the beach and in the mountains. This is where the real Cyprus is found.

The villages in the Troodoos mountains are a world away from the beaches and holiday makers. They’re old, sometimes crumbling, sometimes lovingly resorted, full of character and where Cypriot culture is still quietly, stubbornly intact. The kind of places where old men sit outside kafeneions and nobody is in a hurry.

The coast is beautiful. There’s no denying it.

But my happy place is and always will be the mountains ⛰️

And the real Cyprus — the one with the culture still intact, the villages still lived in, the churches still breathing, the mountains still wild — that one is in the mountains.

If you’re headed to Cyprus, I highly suggest you go find it!

Seven years ago, Calais & I sat in the courtyard o Seven years ago, Calais & I sat in the courtyard of a traditional Cypriot house and made halloumi with a local woman who had learned the recipe from her own mother. 🇨🇾
It was one of those travel experiences that stuck with me.
So it was the only must do when we were back in Cyprus.
This time with our whole family. 👇
The village looked the same. The kitchen looked the same. But this time it was her son welcoming us in — a local who grew up in these mountains, learned everything he knows about halloumi from his mother, and is now carrying that tradition into the next generation.
We spent the morning making halloumi the way it has been made in this village for generations. Fresh goat’s milk from his cousin’s herd. Heated slowly, the curds gathered by hand, pressed, cut, wrapped and boiled. Every step done the way his mother taught him. The way her mother taught her.
And then we ate it. Still warm. In all its squeaky glory.
There are no words for how different fresh halloumi tastes from anything you’ve ever bought in a supermarket. It’s not even the same food. Softer, richer, squeakier in the best way.
But the food almost isn’t the point.
The point is the passing on of traditions. Ensuring commercialization doesn’t completely eliminate culture. A woman who learned a recipe from her mother, passing it onto her son, who loves it enough to keep that tradition alive. And our family coming back years later because some experiences are worth returning to.

Save this if you’re planning a Cyprus trip. And if you ever get the chance to visit Aperanti Agrotourism and make halloumi, tell them the Canadians in the big blue jeep sent you!
